Fun Handcrafted Menu

I made this Handcrafted menu into 2 unique copies for the gallery and library restaurant KellerStudio, run by a design agency. It’s situated in quite a remote and calm green place somewhere in Taiwan, most of our customers are design students.

A Design Inspired By An Artist

The inspiration comes from an illustration book made into a folder that my project manager fell in love with. And to make it fun, we decide to make a Folder Menu.

“The folder of a designer!”

When The Problem Is The Solution

Years ago, the project manager created mascots who were designers and artists for goodies, for the restaurant.

But much to her regret they have not been developed further since.

So I decide to take them to another level, letting them tell their story.

I was then entrusted to make the folder alone. It was so exciting!

“Let the menu tell the story of these characters”

Folder And Designers

What would the folder of a designer look like? Loose sheets of paper, stationary, IPad (lighter than a MAC right?), accompanied with a cup of coffee, glasses, a book, and some draft papers.

Having this in hand, you can now imagine yourself as a designer on one of our tables ready to eat, or draw something while waiting for your food to arrive.

Menu And Mascots

How can a menu tell story?

After several attempts, I find blending the mascots with the menu quite amusing.

We usually draw on tracing paper upon our original draft. Here the mascots are on the tracing paper, upon the menu on Shuan paper.

That’s one way of blending them.

I also attribute to each group of dish a mascot, accordingly to their personality.

For example, the red mascot named Rosa loves playing, and Bagels look like Hula hoops, you can make it roll too. That is something she can play with !

“Since I have to handcraft it, why not choose papers designers usually use to print on? ”

A Playful Menu

Discovering the final menu was kind of a surprise for everyone, and I was very happy to see how they love it. May the fun keeps spreading around the globe.
